Developing a library of theatre resources to reduce social barriers and waste

National Theatre of Scotland (NTS), situated at Rockvilla alongside the canal in the north of Glasgow, are committed to bringing sustainable theatre to audiences across the country.

CIRCULAR RESULTS

Rethink resources: NTS’s loan system enables theatre companies to share and access a wealth of resources while avoiding unnecessary short-term purchases.

HOW THEY DID IT

Since moving into the bigger venue at Rockvilla, NTS have developed an extensive library of resources offered to organisations through its loan system. NTS provide free or subsidised spaces available for working, meeting, and rehearsals to companies the organisation supports and a vast collection of technical kit such as scenery, recording equipment, lighting, props and costumes available for hire. Operating as a key function of the site, the system ensures that central funding is disseminated across the theatre world.

NTS’s loan system acts as a blueprint for circularity in the performing arts sector, providing a catalogue of second-hand resources that are accessible and affordable.

In 2024 the number of loans from each area was as follows:

  • Space loans – 73 different companies supported.
  • Tech kit – 60 separate kit requests fulfilled, totalling hundreds of individual items.
  • Props – 105 props forms, each consisting of various items.
  • Costumes – 35 different companies supported in dressing their shows.

NTS plan to expand their services by collaborating with performing arts organisations across the UK to build connections between communities, reduce waste by increasing circularity in the arts, and ensure that theatre can be enjoyed and pursued by all.
