Supply chain collaboration to collectively reduce emissions
By working towards comprehensive sustainable and development goals, Matthew Algie are proactively addressing climate change by working closely with suppliers to reduce emissions and to increase circularity in the business by reusing, refurbishing and recycling coffee machines, parts and packaging where possible.
CIRCULAR RESULTS
Collaboration: Matthew Algie’s pilot project will give them greater understanding of how to reduce emissions and increase circular practices across the supply chain.
HOW THEY DID IT
Matthew Algie are currently carrying out a pilot project in collaboration with a cooperative it sources coffee from in Honduras, Capucas, and a civil society organisation, Solidaridad. The business aim to accurately measure their supply chain carbon emissions and understand successful strategies for emissions reduction on coffee farms. In doing so, Matthew Algie will support the business’s goals while ensuring partners are also engaged and equipped to work towards net zero.
So far, training has been provided to cooperative staff and coffee farmers on climate change, and data has been collected from 100 producers. The data analysis has highlighted key emissions hotspots to focus on in this location, for example 68.7% of emissions are attributed to the application of fertilisers. A strategy has been put in place to improve soil nutrition levels, reduce the use of synthetic fertilisers and achieve optimal shade coverage. Matthew Algie hope to use this pilot as a blueprint for further engagement in its coffee supply chain.
