A sustainable supply chain
MAST Architects deliver projects across several sectors, including office refurbishments, new builds, conservation and retrofit, but have a particular focus on social housing and community projects. In 2022 they designed The ECOHOUSE.
CIRCULAR RESULTS
The project will allow for continual development to support the future of the construction industry.
Rethink resources: A sustainable supply chain is embedded throughout the process with an emphasis on lowering the amount of embodied carbon.
HOW THEY DID IT
This project is a sustainability training centre for West Lothian College, which provides a state-of-the art training facility allowing the construction sector to work towards achieving net zero by 2045. By upskilling student with the skills, knowledge and practical experience that is vital to the success of sustainable construction and technologies.
The ECOHOUSE includes two semi-detached homes that are completed to two levels of finish. One is designed to meet Section 7 platinum level of the Scottish Building Standards, the other as a shell, which will support the development of the key high-level practical skills needed to support the future of the construction industry.
Each material was carefully considered and sourced from responsible and sustainably focused companies.
The features of the main house include:
Feature | Reason |
Triple glazing | Highly insulated building fabric reducing heat loss and energy demand |
Solar panels | Reduced dependence on traditional energy sources |
Air source heat pump | Excels in energy efficiency, reduces energy use and significant contribution to overall sustainability |
Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery | Provides fresh filtered air into a building and recovers energy from stale air reducing heating demand and energy use |
Electric car charging point | Low emission transport option and legislative requirement |
