Providing an inclusive space for everyone to cycle
Free Wheel North are an example of an organisation that comprehensively practice their values. The charity prioritise access to urban spaces for all through active travel, with sustainability for people and the environment at the heart of their work.
CIRCULAR RESULTS
Rethink resources: Circularity is embedded into Free Wheel North’s work by redirecting second-hand cycles from landfill for service users to enjoy on their inclusive, outdoor track.
HOW THEY DID IT
By providing a safe, accessible and affordable space for diverse groups to build their confidence cycling, Free Wheel North’s services naturally support the decarbonisation of lifestyles by reducing reliance on cars. The team take a well-rounded approach to sustainable living by fostering a space that nurtures the physical and mental wellbeing of cyclists with the protection of the environment at the forefront of their ambitions.
The charity understand that access to transport is unequal, and those living with varying disabilities are often inhibited by a lack of opportunities and limited infrastructure. Free Wheel North address the crucial need for attainable, safe, and enjoyable access to active travel, with the core focus being on the diverse experiences of disabled people and the holistic health benefits that cycling provides.
Free Wheel North face a number of challenges, including inadequate infrastructure across Glasgow to accommodate inclusive and safe cycling, and limited resources that restrict the organisation’s reach. Free Wheel North does, however, take a fleet of cycles to schools and harder to reach communities through its popular outreach programmes.
The charity have hundreds of cycles, including a fleet of inclusive cycles, to maintain across the site. Without a fulltime mechanic, many fall into disrepair with limited means to fix them up again. While the organisation is enjoyed by thousands each year, without sufficient resources, many of the cycles bought or donated can’t be looked after adequately and remain out of use. However, Free Wheel North is working at UK Government level to garner support for reducing waste streams in cycling and to highlight the severity of waste in the inclusive cycling sector in particular.
Free Wheel North hope to expand their services across Glasgow and beyond. The current cycle track is well used and enjoyed by many communities, demonstrating the high demand for an inclusive, healthy and fun space for people to build their cycling confidence.
By working collectively with other organisations, such as Wheels for Wellbeing, Free Wheel North aspire to continue influencing more barrier free urban environments where everyone can cycle together – creating greener, safer, and people-centred places.
