Joining us as our July guest speaker is Lesley Thomson, Co-Founder & CEO of Nudge Innovations. Lesley spent a decade building her career in commercial roles at Johnson & Johnson before deciding to study Entrepreneurship. It was there she first learned about the principles of the circular economy. The idea that waste is a design problem, not an inevitable consequence of consumption, completely changed how she thought about business. Inspired by the belief that business can eliminate waste by design rather than simply manage it, Lesley co-founded Nudge Innovations.

The market for reusables has exploded. Reusable cups, and bottles are everywhere, and yet single-use cup waste continues at 2.5 billion cups a year. It’s not an awareness problem. It’s not a recycling problem. It’s an infrastructure problem. People already carry reusable water bottles every day, so we know behaviour can change. The question is why the same thing hasn’t happened with coffee cups. The answer is hygiene. Without the ability to clean a cup conveniently away from home, the circular loop never closes. Behaviour breaks down, bottles go uncleaned, and good intentions give way to the convenience of disposables.

NuWash is her answer, a rapid on-demand cup and bottle cleaning station, and the infrastructure that finally makes reuse practical at scale. A Scottish EDGE award winner with its first live deployment at Aegon Edinburgh, Nudge is turning circular economy principles into solutions people genuinely want to use.
