Sofa for Life: A circular business model

According to the RSA report ‘Re-arranging the furniture‘, 1.6 million tonnes of furniture and bulky waste end up in landfill in the UK every year which includes around 5 million sofas. It was findings such as this that made Glasgow School of Art graduate, Saskia Goeres, curious to explore if a product could be designed in a fully circular way while still creating an economically viable product made of quality materials.

What started out as a masters project is now a successful start-up business. Although not yet trading, with a team of passionate designers and engineers, Saskia is catching the attention of the Scottish business community.

The Product

Portable, washable, customisable…

Sofa for Life is an innovative design within a circular service. As well as being able to design, transport, and wash the sofa yourself, the modular design combined with the circular service model gives customers the option to exchange and upgrade components and return old parts to be recycled or re-purposed.
